Silver Star Mountain

Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Rainier from Silver Star Mountain

Today Nike and I crossed the Columbia River and made our first journey to SW Washington with a hike up Silver Star Mountain. This ridge is about half-way between Portland and Mt. St. Helens; about a 60 mile trip for us. Unfortunately, the last 7 miles are over some of the most potholed dirt and gravel roads we'd ever seen. The hike was great but a little tricky as we had to cross about a mile of deep snow that was getting pretty soft on this sunny and 80 degree day.

The views on the hike and at the summit were fantastic. From this viewpoint you can see four snow-covered peaks in the Cascades: Mt. St. Helens just to our north, Mt. Adams to its east, Mt. Rainier probably a hundred miles north, and Mt. Hood to the southeast back in Oregon.

Haley was off leash for most of the hike and graciously carried our lunch to the top for us. She is pretty wiped out right now.

Haley was more interested in critters than the view of Mt. St. Helens

At the summit was the remains of an old fire tower - we made it!
