My mom left on Monday. As expected, it was a very tearful and difficult goodbye for us. It was very special to share these weeks with my mom and have her spend time with Melina and me. Now that I am a mother myself, I feel a whole new love and appreciation for my mom. Dave went to the airport with us but went to work afterwards, which was hard for me because the house felt to empty. It was even worse yesterday, which was Melina's first day at daycare. I was really home alone (except for Leroy and Haley, which snooze most of the day). Dave and I had brought Melina to daycare around 8 and I picked her up at 2. She did pretty well, much better than I did. I called 4 times to check on her. Turns out 2 was the perfect time to get her: As I was pulling out of the garage, I noticed some percipitation which was more solid than rain. By the time Melina and I left the daycare center, there was snow on the roads! No mention of this in the forecast (would Todd Howell, my favorite weather man in Knoxville, have done a better job?). Luckily, Dave was able to leave work at about the same time because it's always significantly colder in Hillsboro. We had a few inches of accumulation and traffic was an absolute disaster. The director of the daycare spent the night there because some parents were unable to pick up their kids until 9 pm.
Today, we did a dry run of our morning routine, including my commute to work with public transportation. I have to tranfer twice but with a good connection, it's pretty fast (ca. 40 mins, which I probably couldn't beat if I drove and had to look for parking). The key is not missing the bus from the daycare to the light rail transit center. Of course, I skipped that part of my commute this morning because of the snow. Dave drove me to the transit center because the bus probably wouldn't have been on time anyway. Most of the snow is gone but traffic is still moving slower than normal. Our routine still needs tweaking - you underestimate how long it takes to get ready and out the door...
