Home, Sweet Home

Recently, Dave talked to a mortage broker and we were thrilled to find out that we should be able to get a mortage that will allow us to afford the kind of home we have in mind. Near perfect credit scores and the low interest rates are really working in our favor. So yesterday, we met with a realtor and we'll probably start looking at houses sometime this week. This is really excited but also tricky: What are our priorities? What are we willing to compromise on? We're not very flexible when it comes to the area: we'll have to stay in southwest or go a bit farther west into Beaverton and Tigard. We love the area we currently live in (Multnomah Village) but the houses here are very expensive although most of them are ugly ranchers and very small.
I'd LOVE to continue to take public transportation ($36/month for the bus pass vs. $90 for the parking pass!) but that limits us even more in terms of area, especially if you don't want to spend too much time a day on the bus (it's surprising how few express bus lines there are in Portland). Even when you go farther out, the yards are often puny. But we'd like to have at least a small yard so we can grow vegetables...
Lots to think about - we'll keep you posted.
