I am sitting in on the class I'll be teaching next term. On the first day of class, Kim explained that this is the first term she's giving quizzes based on the reading assignments because in the past, students were often not prepared. Today, the TA was teaching (Kim's at a conference) and she gave the 2nd quiz. One student complained: "I wrote a letter to the department head about these quizzes. This is so high school. It's demeaning!" Of course, others had to complain too. Luckily, several students pointed out the benefits for them.
First of all: I absolutely HATE students who don't address an issue of concern with the teacher and have to run to the department head or even higher up to complain. Second, if this is so below you, you should get easy 100% on all of them. Third: yes, this is college but many of your colleagues don't act like it. I guess you're one of the mature ones - patt yourself on the shoulder, pal.
Arg, this enfuriates me! To a certain extent, students are the same no matter where you go.

I guess it's comforting, in a sad way, that soem things are the same no matter where you are adn there is no such thing as the perfect job in the perfect place. But there is the good enough job in the good enough place.
Those pesky students! Universities would be so much better without them. :^)
