A social scientist walks into the office of a mathematician ... No, this is not a joke, it just happened to me. It was kinda funny though.
Lately, I've gotten interested in social network analysis, which analyzes relationships and dynamics within groups of people. Today, I met with somebody in the math department to get some basic info about the approach, thinking that I might be able to use it for my own research. Talking to that mathematician was a wild experience, almost like talking to somebody who doesn't speak your language. I was thinking I should've taped our conversation to analyze it lateron. We were definitely not on the same page. Is there really such a big divide between disciplines!?

It's like the time I met some microbiologists and when I told them I was a historian of science they said "oh, microbiology doesn't have any history". Right.
