Drive Day 1: 508 miles (817 kilometers) and we almost saw Superman!

6:45 am: alarm goes off; not a bad night on an air mattress but we're still pretty tired
7:00 am: Dave goes running w/ Haley; last cleaning + packing; loading the car - a pain despite our trial run the other day
11:08 am: departure; tears on the way out of our neighborhood
next 9 hours: drive to Nashville, then through Kentucky and Illinois; disappointed that the laptop's maximum volume is still too low to listen to the audiobooks we had downloaded for the drive; in Illinois we pass Marion (I doubt there's a town called 'Nike' so 'Marion' will have to do) and a bunch of towns with German names; LOTS of Illinois troopers handing out tickets; pass on the opportunity to see the giant Superman statue near Metropolis, IL
ca 6:15 pm central time: cross the river into Missouri and St. Louis; drive by the arch (couldn't park the car because of the luggage on the roof that's not secured)
ca. 7 pm: arrival at the La Quinta near the airport; Dave grabs dinner from the Quizno's next door while I do my back exercises; hope we can keep Haley from barking everytime somebody walks past our room

Next time we drive across the country I'm aiming for the giant Superman. In Metropolis even. Glad to hear you are safe and on the move.
